After consulting with my pediatrician we decided it was safe to take Ashlyn hiking with us in the Rocky Mountain National Park. We had read a bunch of scary stuff about altitude sickness so we wanted to make sure we were not putting her in any kind of danger. Thankfully she did great - slept through the entire hike except for waking up twice to eat! Madison even did good too - she walked for a bit and rode on our back for a bit - which is a real miracle if you have ever been around her and tried to keep her still and in one place! She even managed at one point to fall asleep on my back. It was a great day except for the last 10 minutes out of the forest it poured but none of the girls seemed to mind - Madi just sang away and kept going! The climax of our trip was the beautiful lake buried in the mountains. The crazy thing was that when we got there I kept saying "Madi look up and see all this pretty stuff God made" but she would only look up for a second and then go right back to jumping in these tiny little mud puddles that were one the rocks. And I thought to myself this is kind of what we do with God - He offers us all these wonderful things - everlasting peace and joy and love - and yet we are so quick to settle for more temporary substitutes. I am now beginning to understand why pastors alwasy use their kids for sermon illustrations!
